'Street Smarts' course to be offered at RHS
The School District of Rhinelander Board of Education approved a new health course Monday designed to teach young high school students to be "street smart" as they navigate their adolescent years. (subscriber access)

On​ ​a​ ​very​ ​sunny,​ ​warm​ ​Sunday​ ​in​ ​September,​ ​several​ ​Crescent​ ​Elementary​ ​staff​ ​members gathered​ ​at​ ​the​ ​school​ ​along​ ​with​ ​several​ ​of​ ​their​ ​family​ ​members.​ ​​Their​ ​mission​ ​for​ ​the​ ​day was​ ​to​ ​volunteer​ ​their​ ​time​ ​to​ ​make​ ​environmental​ ​improvements​ ​to​ ​the​ ​exterior​ ​of​ ​the​ ​school.

Badger Boys State
Approximately 870 high school junior boys from every part of Wisconsin attended the 2017 Badger Boys State at Ripon College campus this past June. The students were grouped into cities and counties which formed the 51st state to learn about how our government works.

The School District of Rhinelander will be host 4K registration and screening from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 20 at Pelican Elementary School. Children that will be age 4 prior to Sept. 1 are welcome to register.

I brought a Hodag to Central
An author who has written two children's books staring Rhinelander's famed mythical Hodag worked with the students at Central Intermediate School Monday.

Tom Barnett, author of "I Brought a Hodag to School" read the sequel, "I Brought a Hodag Home," to the students, went over the story, took them through the drawing process of the main character, Bob the Hodag; and more. (subscriber access)

School board supports superintendent's approval of concert
The Stand with Standing Rock benefit concert held Friday evening at the John and Dori Brown Performing Arts Center at Rhinelander High School drew an objection from at least one area resident. That person complained to school board member David Holperin, who questioned why superintendent Kelli Jacobi authorized the concert without the school board's approval. (subscriber access)
