Two new pertussis cases identified at RHS since break
After an extended holiday break following an outbreak of pertussis (whooping cough), School District of Rhinelander officials have employed a heightened sense of watchfulness since students returned to class Jan. 2.

School board supports superintendent's approval of concert
The Stand with Standing Rock benefit concert held Friday evening at the John and Dori Brown Performing Arts Center at Rhinelander High School drew an objection from at least one area resident. That person complained to school board member David Holperin, who questioned why superintendent Kelli Jacobi authorized the concert without the school board's approval. (subscriber access)

UW-Madison study shows SDR enrollment leveling off
Declining enrollment has been a serious concern for the School District of Rhinelander for years, but the results of a recent study show there may be reason for some optimism.

According to Sarah Kemp, a researcher with the Applied Population Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, enrollment in the district should remain relatively steady for at least the next five years. (subscribers access)

Eagle River Fab Lab slated to open in January
Earlier this year, Northland Pines Middle School in Eagle River was informed it will receive one of the state's Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) grants.

At the a recent economic development summit hosted by Gov. Scott Walker, principal Dan Marien explained the application process and Fab Lab benefits to a panel audience. (subscriber access)

Artstart cleanup
Members of the Kiwanis Club of Rhinelander and the RHS Key Club helped with a fall cleanup of the ArtStart grounds and parking lot. The cleanup was in preparation for a spring landscaping and construction project that includes building an outdoor stage and children's classroom. Kiwanis also provided funding for the recently completed indoor children's classroom at ArtStart. Both the outdoor and indoor classrooms will provide venues for ArtStart to further art education for children in the Rhinelander community.

On Friday, Nov. 11, many students at Rhinelander High School had an opportunity to enjoy one of the quarterly incentives organized by the RHS PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) team, the district announced in a press release.

After interviewing several veterans, we discovered what Veterans Day means, not only to us, but to the people who we are commemorating on this day.

Crescent Elementary students honor veterans
Students in Mrs. Olson's kindergarten and Mrs. Bishop's third-grade class at Crescent Elementary School partnered up to learn about Veterans Day and created a project to honor our veterans' service to the country.
