Nicolet graduates 470 in weekend ceremonies
Years of hard work and perseverance was rewarded Saturday as 470 students received 580 credentials at the Nicolet Area Technical College spring 2016 commencement ceremonies. Many graduates received multiple college credentials including associate degrees, diplomas and certificates.

The ceremony took place inside the Rhinelander High School Auditorium, due to renovations at the Nicolet Learning Resource Center. (subscriber access)

Rhinelander students win automotive competition at Nicolet
Students at Rhinelander High School walked away with a traveling trophy this month, after winning the first annual Nicolet Automotive Competition.

Led by their teacher Josh Legrey, all four of the students who competed placed in the top 10. Senior Jed Everson took first place, senior Lucas Price took second, sophomore Riley VanDoren took fifth, and junior Sam Julson took sixth. (subscriber access)

Elcho woman and three others to be awarded GFWC Health Scholarship in May
At the Wisconsin General Federation of Women's Clubs' annual convention this weekend at The Lodge at Leathem Smith in Sturgeon Bay, Elizabeth (Beth) Goerke of Elcho will be awarded a 2016 GFWC - Wisconsin Health Scholarship.

Goerke is a returning adult student at Nicolet College who is re-inventing herself from veterinary services to become a medical assistant/emergency medical technician (EMT), the club said in a press release.

Nicolet's Stuckenbruck named to national community college 40 Under 40 honors list
Nicolet College Dean of Liberal Arts and Business Emily Stuckenbruck has been named to the inaugural list of 40 Under 40 Class of 2016 of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges.

Inductees from across the country first had to be nominated for the honor and then chosen through a selection process. Criteria included the impact each had on their college and community and their potential for future leadership growth.

Careers on Wheels event gets students thinking about the future
It will be a few years before they enter the workforce, but students at Central Intermediate School are already thinking about what they want to do when they grow up. Years from now, some may look back at the 2016 Careers on Wheels event, held Thursday, as the day they found their calling.

The event gives youngsters a chance to examine vehicles and talk to adults involved in firefighting, the military, law enforcement, logging and funeral service, among other professions. (subscriber access)

Nicolet College students apply classroom skills to help others
Nicolet College Business Management Service Learning students raised more than $5,000 for charities by taking what they've learned in the classroom and applying these skills to fundraising projects to benefit others.

They recently raised $3,150 for the Flint, Mich. water crisis, with the funds going to the Red Cross and its efforts to provide clean drinking water to the residents of Flint. Students collected donations through fund drives at Walmart in Rhinelander and Nelson's County Market in Tomahawk to make the Red Cross donation.

Nicolet Student Portfolio Show to showcase top work May 10
Student projects that showcase two years of skills training at Nicolet College will be on display at the Student Portfolio Show from 4:30 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 10, in the Learning Resources Center.

The event will feature projects by students graduating from the architectural technology, early childhood education, and graphic design associate degree programs, the college said in a press release.

Fundraiser to be held for RHS Spanish Club's upcoming trip to Peru
The Rhinelander High School Spanish Club will host an event at Bucketheads Bar and Grill starting at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 23 to benefit the Peru Trip 2017, the school district said in a press release.

Local band Mr. Boyko will be playing your favorite music from the '50s on up.

There will be a 50/50 raffle and prizes.

"Please stop by Bucketheads this Saturday and help the RHS Spanish Club raise money for their trip to Peru," the release states. "Thank you in advance, for your support."

The scenic lakes, rivers and forests of the Upper Midwest will be the classroom for dozens of Nicolet College Outdoor Adventure Series classes April through September.

The series, in its 20th year, features adventures geared to a wide range of interests, ages, and physical abilities.
