Nicolet College apprentices awarded Ascendium scholarships

Two students in Nicolet College apprenticeship programs recently each received $1,500 Tools of the Trade scholarships from the Ascendium Education Group, formerly Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation and Affiliates.

Carpentry apprentice Garret Coffen of Lake Tomahawk, and plumbing apprentice Jeffrey Fannin of Argonne, each received scholarships which will go to purchase the tools, clothing and supplies they will use to complete their apprenticeships.

Each apprenticeship is based on a partnership between an employer, the college, and the apprentice, who works for the employer. Apprentices attend class one day every two weeks.

"This way they learn the theory of a specific trade in the classroom and then apply what they learned when they're working on the job," said Jeff Labs, Nicolet Dean of trade, industry and apprenticeships. "The result is apprentices acquire great skill sets that they'll have for a lifetime. The sponsoring employers get highly trained employees who will contribute to the success of their companies."

Coffen works for Coffen Construction/Golden Eagle Log Homes in Minocqua, and Fannin works for Sherry's Plumbing in Three Lakes.

This year Ascendium surpassed the $1 million mark in total Tools of the Trade scholarships awarded. The organization started awarding the scholarships in 2013.

"Our scholarships help learners overcome financial barriers so they can focus on successfully completing their apprenticeship and advancing to an in-demand trade career," said Ascendium chairman, president and CEO Richard D. George. "We're proud to help Wisconsin's hardworking apprentices build brighter futures."

Along with carpentry and Ppumbing, Nicolet also offers pipefitting and heavy equipment operator apprenticeships. For more information about apprenticeship programs at Nicolet, visit or call the college at 715-365-4493, TTY 1-800-947-3529 or 711.
