Crescent Elementary School in Rhinelander has been selected to receive a 2019 Cellcom Green Gift in the amount of $900.
According to a press release announcing the gift, Crescent Elementary is working to establish a recycling program by strategically placing bins for glass, plastic and aluminum throughout the school. The $900 Green Gift from Cellcom will support the purchase of the new bins.
"As a community of learners and future consumers, we believe in the importance of creating globally minded citizens who feel empowered to do their part in helping our environment. By educating our students on the benefits of recycling, reducing, and reusing, we are hopeful that this green initiative will have a carryover effect to the student's homes and the greater Rhinelander area," said Amanda Olson, kindergarten teacher at Crescent Elementary.
A total of 32 green organizations, including Wild Instincts wildlife rehabilitation center in Rhinelander, received a share of the $37,398 in Green Gifts from Cellcom this year. The program uses funds generated from Cellcom's cell phone recycling program to fund green nonprofit initiatives. Customers and community members can bring in their old or unwanted phones to be reused and recycled. Cellcom sends the phones to recyclers who in return send money to Cellcom for the materials that were saved from the phones. Cellcom's Green Gift program completes the green cycle that starts with consumers being environmentally-conscious and donating devices.
"By simply recycling old devices our customers are partners in our Green Gifts program. Together we are investing in our communities and contributing to programs and projects that support sustainability and have a positive impact on the environment," said Cindy Durand, director of public affairs at Cellcom.
Visit Cellcom's website for the full list of award recipients. Cellcom is proud to support organizations of all sizes, whose work is impacting the community and building a greener tomorrow, the release states. The company's recycling program has generated $484,373 for local charities over the past 16 years.
