Minocqua Chamber welcomes Central Wisconsin River Series

Beckie Gaskill
Outdoors Writer

The Central Wisconsin River Series will once again be holding its two-day championship bass tournament on the Lake Minocqua Chain.

The series holds four qualifying tournaments throughout the summer. In these qualifiers, 45 teams compete for the top spots, winning them a place in the championship. The Minocqua Chamber of Commerce has long been a supporter of the series, and is once again welcoming River Series anglers and their families back to the Minocqua area.

This year, the Central Wisconsin River Series will fish the Stevens Point Flowage on Saturday, May 11 to kick off the season. From there the series moves north, fishing the Willow Flowage on Saturday, June 2. This is only the second year for the series at this fishery, with many anglers looking forward to the challenge.

In July the series stops in Rhinelander at Boom Lake on Sunday July 21, which should prove to be another challenging body of water for anglers. In August, River Series anglers will take on Lake Mohawksin in Tomahawk for one last chance at a place in the championship.

The River Series championship will be held out of The Beacons on Lake Minocqua on Sept. 7 and 8. With 45 teams vying for the 36 spots in the championship, competition throughout the year is sure to be stiff. Anglers are looking forward to fishing the Minocqua Chain once again, having participated in the same event there two years ago.

"We're excited to be back in Minocqua," River Series tournament director Phil Skoug said. "The anglers know they will catch fish, but finding the big ones is always the challenge. And everyone in the area treats our anglers great. We're happy to be back."

Skoug said many anglers bring their families and make a weekend trip out of it. He also expects many to make the trip to Minocqua in the weeks leading up to the tournament to spend time prefishing and enjoying all Minocqua has to offer.

The weigh-in and awards for the championship are open to the public and will take place at The Beacons on the waterfront at 3 p.m. each day. Those interested in taking part in the series can find them on Facebook for more information.
