Inaugural Rod Gaskill Memorial Bass Tournament to be held Aug. 17

Beckie Gaskill
Outdoors Writer

The inaugural Rod Gaskill Memorial Bass Tournament will be held on Boom Lake on Saturday, Aug. 17.

Gaskill was an avid bass angler, moving to Rhinelander from Las Vegas in the mid-1990s. Many anglers remember him as the tournament director for the Hodag Bassmasters Boom Lake Open, which he and his bass club ran for over a decade. Last summer, Gaskill lost his battle with pancreatic cancer but, until the end, he still spent as much time on the water as his health would allow.

Those who knew him know how important he felt strongly about the need to get the next generation involved in the sport of fishing. He took part in several Kids' Casting Contests as well as helping with the DNR Heritage Day event.

Due to his drive to involve more kids in fishing, proceeds from the memorial tournament will go to a foundation called Tackle the Storm, with all money being earmarked for kids in Wisconsin. Tackle the Storm helps kids who have experienced some sort of storm in their lives, natural or man-made. This includes kids who may have lost a home to a natural disaster and kids whose families have been torn apart in some way.

With every $5 raised, Tackle the Storm can supply one young angler with a rod, reel and tackle box, everything the young person needs to go fishing. This gives kids a chance to get out into the outdoors, learn a new skill, gain confidence in themselves, and learn to cope with the problems of life in a different way.

The tournament will take place at the Hodag Park boat landing on Boom Lake in Rhinelander. Take off for the tournament will be at 7 a.m., with two-person teams fishing until 3 p.m. There will be food and beverages available for purchase and a kids casting contest for those under the age of 12. There will be prize drawings after weigh-in and before the awards ceremony. The public is welcome to attend. Entry forms can be picked up at Mel's Trading Post in Rhinelander and Kurt's Island Sports in Minocqua. For more information, email
