Lakes and Rivers Convention online registration open

Due to concerns over COVID-19 and Gov. Evers' recent "Safer at Home" order, the annual Lakes and Rivers Convention, scheduled to be held in the beginning of April at the Stevens Point Holiday Inn and Convention Center, has been moved online.

"This is a rare opportunity for low cost lake learning with no travel," Vilas County lakes conservation specialist Cathy Higley said. The cost is $10 per day and will take place online April 1-3. Those interested in attending will find information on the convention on the UW-Stevens Point website in the UW-Extension Lakes section. There is an option to sign up for each day. Those interested in attending both days should be sure to add both to their "shopping cart" before checking out.

In-person CDAC meetings

suspended

County Deer Advisory Committee meetings are scheduled in each county in the spring of the year. Many of those meetings, such as those in Oneida and Vilas County, were scheduled between March 30 and April 9. These meetings will be held in a call-in only format. The agenda for each county includes the development of antlerless deer quotas for the county as well as recommendations to reach the intended population objective. According to a recent press release, presentations normally given by DNR wildlife biologists will be available on the DNR website starting March 26.

Public comment will not be taken during the call-in sessions. However, an online input form is available on the DNR website and anyone interested in providing feedback may do so using that form from April 16-29.

Oneida County will hold its call-in meeting on at 6 p.m. April 1. Vilas County's meeting is set for 6 p.m. April 8. The call in number for either meeting is 855-947-8255. The passcode for Oneida County's meeting is 7301-129. The passcode for Vilas County's meeting is 8257-105.

Wisconsin state parks and trails remain open with some changes

As of this writing, the DNR has said Wisconsin state parks and trails will remain open with some changes. The department did stress visitors should heed any new statements issued, such as the order to limit group gatherings to 10 or fewer people. At the time of their recent press release, it was said parks and law enforcement personnel would be working to ensure adherence to that standard.

Campsites are now closed through April 30 and refunds will be given. No reservations are being accepted at this time. Non-essential buildings in parks will also be closed for the duration of this health emergency. Restrooms on most properties will remain open as long as there are sufficient resources to clean and maintain them.

At the time of this writing, outdoor recreational opportunities such as hiking, trails, fishing, hunting and such, remain available.

This may change with the recent "safer at home" order, but more information was not yet available as of press time. Before heading out, check the DNR website for more information.
