Anglers take on Lake Tomahawk for Northern Lakes Bassmasters Open
Saturday marked the 13th annual Northern Lakes Bassmasters Lake Tomahawk Open. While the sun was shining, making it a warm day on the water, the wind was also blowing, making certain places, especially on Lake Tomahawk itself, difficult to fish. Anglers had the ability to fish the entire Minocqua Chain, however. This meant many anglers made the run up to lakes Minocqua and Kawageusaga in search of some good largemouth. (subscriber access)

Fish like a girl
Last week there was this little get-together down in Florida called ICAST. ICAST stands for the International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades. For those who do not fish, it probably means nothing. To those of us who do, however, we watched with bated breath as new products were revealed and innovative ideas put to the test. Dropping a line
With typical July weather settling into the Northwoods, area residents have been looking for ways to escape the heat and humidity, with fishing from the dock at Pelican Rapids Boat Landing being one option this man chose.

The lake where you live
The impact of landscape position

Just across the road from Birch Lake where I live lies Sand Lake, less than one quarter the size of Birch at 40 acres, much clearer and, unlike Birch, free of autumn algae blooms. (subscriber access)

Fish like a girl
Anyone who has read my column with regularity (thank you to both of you) knows I love to fish, and that love of fishing was fostered very early on. My dad took me hunting and fishing quite a bit when I was young. (subscriber access)

The lake where you live
A flower grows at the base of our pier that would look right at home in a botanical garden, in the hair of a wedding flower girl, or in the corsage of a prom queen. It's better, though, exactly where it is, blooming in splendor on the shore of Birch Lake, where I see it every time I go down to the boat. (subscriber access)

Traveling trails less traveled
Boat (bot) n. 1. A small, open watercraft propelled by oars, sails or an engine. (Collier's dictionary, 1961)

Not having access to a more recent dictionary, I'm not sure what the current primary definition of "boat" might be at present, and I'm sure it's much different than the one I quoted.

What's happening in the garden?
The wet weather this spring and early summer has not been great for many gardens. The Community Garden in Rhinelander has had it share of successes and failures as well. Master Gardener Tom Jerow said gardeners should not lose hope, though. (subscriber access)

Questions regarding the sustainability issues for walleye and other game fish in Vilas and Oneida counties
Since the 1960s there has been a well-documented drop off in the numbers of several species of game fish in many of the Vilas and Oneida county lakes. Some species of fish, such as ciscos, walleye, and some minnows, are far less numerous and/or are no longer present in water bodies which historically held large numbers of sustained populations. Fish like a girl
The Department of Natural Resources has recently set the "live release" category state records for many popular fish. I see this to be a great addition for the CPR angler (Catch, photo, release).

A morning visitor
Lois Kettner had a great surprise Monday morning when a moose sauntered through her yard in Pine Lake near Rhinelander. He made his way out of the woods, meandered through her yard, eating a few leaves from her lilac bush before heading back the way he came. He did not seem to mind Kettner watching him from her deck, she said.
