Rhinelander man, 24, charged with sexually assaulting teenage coworker
By River NEws staff

A 24-year-old Rhinelander man has been charged with sexually assaulting a teenage girl he was supervising as part of his job at a local business.

According to a criminal complaint filed Thursday, Michael A. Chagnon has been charged with two counts of sexual assault of a child under 16 years of age.

He made an initial appearance in Oneida County Circuit Court Thursday afternoon before Judge Michael Bloom.

Bloom set bail at $5,000 cash with conditions Chagnon have no contact whatsoever with the alleged victim or any other female under the age of 17.

According to the complaint, the girl's father called the Rhinelander Police Department Sept. 27 to report his daughter had admitted to having sex with Chagnon, who is approximately a decade older than she is and was her manager at work.

When questioned by police, the girl admitted to having a sexual relationship with Chagnon.

"(The alleged victim) said that everything that happened between the two of them was consensual and that she agreed to everything that happened between her and Michael," the complaint states.

The girl told police she and Chagnon would sometimes "flirt back and forth at work" but they did not have sex until an occasion in August when she agreed to babysit his sister's children.

Approximately a month later there was another sexual encounter following a baby-sitting job, she said.

The girl told police she knew Chagnon was aware of her age as he was involved in hiring her.

When confronted by police, Chagnon admitted to having sex with the girl approximately seven times over the course of a month.

He was taken into custody after making the admission.

An adjourned initial appearance in the case is set for Oct. 2.

If convicted, Chagnon faces a maximum of 80 years in prison.

Do you support so-called red flag bills which would allow judges to seize people's firearms for up to a year if they pose a threat to themselves or others?

I don’t know enough about red flag bills to offer an opinion.
