Eagle River man charged with exposing child to harmful materials
River News Staff

A 47-year-old Eagle River man has been charged with exposing a child to harmful materials after he allegedly sent two photos of his genitals to an Oneida County deputy posing as a 15-year-old girl.

According to a criminal complaint filed May 30, Richard Oscar Wilson responded to an online ad posted last month by an Oneida County officer participating in an Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) investigation.

Wilson and the officer exchanged text messages at which time the officer repeatedly stated "her" age as 15, the complaint states.

According to an excerpt of the text messages included in the complaint, Wilson asked the girl to show him her breasts to prove that she's not a cop.

"Show me yours and I'll show you mine," Wilson wrote, according to the complaint. Later, he sent two nude photos of himself and requested the "girl" send him nude photos of herself.

According to the complaint, the two discussed meeting up but the plans were ultimately canceled.

Wilson was taken into custody following a traffic stop May 29. Upon arrest, Wilson indicated he didn't understand why he was being taken to the sheriff's office and at one point stated that if he was being accused of something he wanted to speak to an attorney. He later agreed to continue talking to the officers without a lawyer and eventually admitted to sending the photos. He said he was not proud of what he had done, referring to the photos, but had no real intention of meeting up with the person with whom he was conversing.

According to online court records, Wilson made an initial appearance in Oneida County Circuit Court Thursday at which time bail was set at $1,000 cash.

As condition of bond, he is to have no unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 18 other that his own child or use any device that connects to the internet.

Wilson is due back in court June 3. If convicted, he faces a maximum of three years and six months in prison.
