Buza files notice of intent to pursue post-conviction relief
Abigail Bostwick
of the Lakeland Times

The Eagle River man convicted of holding a Marshfield Clinic Minocqua Center provider hostage with a meat clever and hatchet will seek post-conviction relief.

Joseph Buza, 71, filed the notice June 13. Buza was sentenced to several years in prison following a hearing in Oneida County Circuit Court June 12.

As part of a plea agreement, Buza pled no contest to false imprisonment and attempted aggravated battery/intending great bodily harm, both as party to a crime.

Dismissed were misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct and carrying a concealed weapon.

Based on court reports, Buza and his then-wife, Jillian Buza, 39, now deceased, went to Marshfield Clinic with a bag containing a loaded revolver, extra ammunition, duct tape, a hatchet and 1.5 pound meat tenderizer along with two rubber store stops.

The doctor had been reportedly easing Jillian off opioid pain medications, according to court records.

Buza held a weapon to the nurse practitioner after the door was barricaded with duct tape - threatening to chop off her hands and feet so she'd "understand the pain." Staff pushed open the door open until police were able to arrive.

Judge Michael Bloom handed down the maximum sentence recommended by the prosecution, six years in prison (three confined, three extended supervision) on the first count and 7.5 years in prison on the second count (five years confinement and 7.5 years extended supervision).

When Buza is released to extended supervision, he may not enter a Marshfield Clinic.
