Restitution set in negligent homicide case
Abigail Bostwick
Of the Lakeland Times

A 21-year-old Hazelhurst man convicted of negligent homicide with a firearm will pay more than $10,000 in restitution to his victim's family.

In June, Jeremiah Solis was found guilty in Vilas County Circuit Court of homicide by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon. A felony count of homicide by firearm with use of a controlled substance, and a separate case of felony bail jumping for violating bond terms were both dismissed. He pled no contest to the charges.

The crime occurred during a gathering of friends at an Eagle River apartment in September 2017 when Solis showed everyone a handgun he'd recently purchased. While displaying the gun, Solis fired what he said he thought was an empty weapon when it discharged, hitting Connor Stephens, 20, Three Lakes, who later died.

Solis was under the influence of marijuana and alcohol, according to court reports.

As part of a plea agreement, Solis received an eight-year prison sentence (four years confined, four years extended supervision) imposed and stayed. He will serve one year jail with work privileges and five years probation as that stayed sentence. Additionally, he was ordered to write a letter of apology to Stephens family, not have contact with that family unless they would like to have it, not consume alcohol or drugs, undergo alcohol and drug and psychological treatment and serve 50 hours community service. He may not own firearms as a convicted felon.

Post-sentence, the family requested time to consider a restitution order. That proposal was approved by Judge Neal Nielsen last week in the amounts of $8,758 and $1,933 for medical bills related to Connor Stephens, based on court documents.
