Schofield man facing theft in business setting charge

Jamie Taylor
River News Reporter

A 45-year-old Schofield man made his initial court appearance Monday on a charge of theft in a business setting of between $5,000 and $10,000.

Jonathan A. Nelson appeared before Oneida County Circuit Judge Patrick O'Melia in response to a summons issued when the case was filed on Dec. 20, 2019. After advising Nelson of his right to legal representation, O'Melia set a $5,000 signature bond and set the matter over until an adjourned initial appearance on Feb. 3.

According to the criminal complaint filed in the case, Nelson had a business relationship for about two years with the alleged victim, with whom he was also personally involved. The alleged victim contacted the Oneida County Sheriff's department on May 2, 2019 to report that Nelson had allegedly diverted the funds from a $2,740.52 payment from a client into his personal bank account.

The complaint also alleges that Nelson used a company debit card to transfer a total of $5,800 from the business' bank account into a different account in a different bank as well as make four ATM transactions of $200 each.

The alleged victim further alleged that on April 11, Nelson removed all of the business' computers, disabled the online banking notifications and removed the alleged victim's cellphone number from the business account.

When a sheriff's department detective reviewed Nelson's financial statements from three banking institutions obtained via subpoena, it was discovered that a total of $8,540.52 in "either unauthorized withdrawals, unauthorized transfers or unauthorized diversion of funds" had been made from the business's bank account into his own, the complaint states.

The charge is a class H felony, which carries a maximum six years imprisonment.
