Hartford man sentenced to prison for Hazelhurst child sex crime
A 52-year-old Hartford man who was charged with three felonies after he used a website to arrange a meeting with a 14-year-old Hazelhurst girl at her home and then molested her Oct. 10, 2016 will spend eight years in prison. (subscriber access)

Stepmother charged with second-degree reckless homicide in death of toddler
A 28-year-old Rhinelander woman was formally charged Tuesday with second-degree reckless homicide in connection with the death of her 20-month-old stepson.

According to a press release issued by Oneida County chief deputy Dan Hess just before 1 p.m. Monday, the department received a 9-1-1 call at approximately 6:24 p.m. Friday reporting a 20-month-old boy was breathing very shallowly.

Deputies and medics responded the scene and transported the child to St. Mary's Hospital. (subscriber access)

Rhinelander man draws jail sentence for stalking, other charges
A 34-year-old Rhinelander man facing a host of felony and misdemeanor charges in a total of four cases received a jail sentence Feb. 28 in Oneida County Circuit Court.

The most serious of the charges against Mark A. Schuh were felony stalking a victim under 18 as well as charges of sex with a child age 16 or older and exposing genitals to a child, both class A misdemeanors, as well as misdemeanor charges of violating a restraining order, bail jumping and two counts of OWI. It's not very often that a judge will reject a joint sentencing recommendation from the state and the defense in a criminal case. Faced with an unusual set of circumstances, Oneida County Circuit Judge Michael Bloom made that choice Friday in sentencing a 60-year-old Tripoli man who held several law enforcement agencies at bay for several hours and threatened to blow up his residence to a three-year prison term.
