The Rhinelander District Library Board of Trustees is still searching for qualified candidates for its vacant library director position.
The trustees have been looking for a new director ever since this spring when former director Ed Hughes resigned to take a job in Mississippi.
Children's librarian Tom Hurlburt is serving as interim director but has told the library board that he wishes to stay in the children's department and has no interest in becoming the permanent director.
The board began searching for candidates last month but so far interest has been limited.
Not many people have applied for the position and some that have expressed interest do not meet the qualifications stated in the job description, according to an update given at a board meeting on Tuesday.
"We have not received very many applications yet. Two of the ones we have received are not even close to being eligible because they do not have master's degrees," board president Jan Baer said.
The state requires directors of libraries the size of the Rhinelander Public Library to have master's degrees.
Baer said she is disappointed in the lack of interest in the position but urged her fellow board members to be patient.
Now is not the time to panic, she said, noting that people are busy in the summer and one of the job postings the board requested was not posted right away.
"At this point, I'm a little disappointed that we haven't gotten more, however we did have the July 4 holiday and our notice, (we) found out (Tuesday) had not really gone out on the Wisconsin Valley website when we thought it did," she said.
"I don't think it's time to panic yet. I think we just need to kind of hold off. We had the holiday and everything, so we might get several in the next few days."
"I think we just need to give it a little more time," he said.
Once more applications are received, the board will schedule a special meeting to review the applications and begin formulating interview questions.
The board hopes to have the positions filled within the next few months.
