Swearingen to speak at Rhinelander Memorial Day Ceremony

The annual Rhinelander Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 27 in the John and Dori Brown Performing Arts Center (formerly Rhinelander High School Auditorium). The emcee will be local attorney and Navy veteran Brian Bennett, organizers said in a press release.

The guest speaker will be Rep. Rob Swearingen.

Swearingen, a Republican from Rhinelander, was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 2012 and is currently serving his third term.

A lifelong resident of Rhinelander, Swearingen attended Rhinelander Catholic Central as a youth and is a 1981 graduate of Rhinelander High School, the release notes. "Swearingen and his wife Amy will be celebrating 25 years of marriage this year and have two daughters.

The couple have owned and operated The Al-Gen Dinner Club in Rhinelander since 1993 and have just started their 26th year at the restaurant.  In addition, Swearingen is the past president of his industry trade association, the Wisconsin Tavern League, representing close to 5,000 members across Wisconsin.

He has held the position since being elected by the membership in 2007.

Swearingen represents the Northwoods counties of Vilas, Oneida, Florence and portions of Forest in the State Legislature.

The ceremony will also feature remarks from Rhinelander Mayor Chris Frederickson and County Board Chairman David Hintz as well as music from the RHS band and show choir. The last roll call of Oneida County veterans who died between May 1, 2018 and May 1, 2019 will also be read.

The event will end with the playing of "Taps".

While there are no official lyrics for "Taps," according to ceremony organizers the following unofficial verses are often used (author unknown):

Fading light, dims the sight,

And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.

From afar, drawing nigh, falls the night.

Day is done, gone the sun,

From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;

All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

Then good night, peaceful night,

Till the light of the dawn shineth bright;

God is near, do not fear, friend good night.
