Assisting departments also honored for courage in fighting blaze in bitter cold
Governor Tony Evers has formally commended Three Lakes Fire Chief Dave Kirby, the Three Lakes Fire Department and the local departments that provided mutual aid on March 4, 2019 when the Oneida Village Inn Restaurant and Motel caught fire on a bitter winter night.
Tony Hallman, a former Three Lakes Town Clerk and Town Supervisor, contacted the governor's office to inquire about recognition for the local firefighters and their chief who worked through the night to contain a massive fire that threatened a large section of the small Northwoods town.
"If it had not been for the professionalism and courage of the Three Lakes Volunteer Fire Department and Fire Chief David Kirby, we could have lost a good portion of our Town," Hallman said in a press release.
The governor's office responded with a Certificate of Commendation to Three Lakes Fire Chief David Kirby which Hallman presented on May 8.
The commendation also recognizes the Sugar Camp Fire Department, Eagle River Area Fire Department, Newbold Fire Department, Pelican Fire Department, Pine Lake Fire Department, Stella Fire Department, Oneida County Ambulance Medic 8 and Oneida County Ambulance Medic 10, and Oneida County Emergency Management who responded to assist.
The commendation concludes, "Therefore, I Tony Evers, Governor of the State of Wisconsin, do hereby commend Fire Chief David Kirby and the Three Lakes Volunteer Fire Department for their exemplary service to their community."
In an interview with the River News after the fire was contained, Kirby described some of the challenges the firefighters faced in fighting the blaze.
"It moved fast," Kirby said. "By the time we saw it and set up on it, it was on another (location) and then it was up in the front. It was moving all around fast."
