5/23/2019 7:26:00 AM City issues notification of sanitary sewer overflow
The City of Rhinelander experienced a sanitary sewer overflow on May 15, according to the water department.
The overflow occurred from a manhole structure (MH K-44) located in front of 511 Hanson Lake Road at approximately 3 p.m., city officials explained in a press release.
"It was discovered a blockage occurred in this local main sewage line located in the street, and this resulted in backup of the main with an overflow from a single manhole structure," the release states. "Upon report of the overflow occurring above ground, the City of Rhinelander Water & Sewer Utility responded to the incident, and corrected the blockage by cleaning and removing the obstruction. This stopped the overflow and released the backup of sewage flow. It is estimated no more than 1,000 gallons of sewage had overflowed before corrective measures were taken. The overflow had proceeded to drain overland to adjacent street ditch line, and the flow had not released direct to local wetlands or waterways. No basement backups were reported as a result of the overflow. All necessary steps are being taken to limit any public health hazard or potential harmful effects to the environment. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has been notified. Pursuant to the requirement of NR 210, this press release is being issued regarding this event. Due to a timely response to this event, less than 1,000 gallon volume of sewage overflow is estimated to have occurred and no adverse impact to area residents and environment is estimated to have resulted."
