Flamingos to flock to Rhinelander for school fundraiser

Five flocks of flamingos are now roosting in the Rhinelander area.

The bright pink-colored birds will assist students traveling to France in 2020 to meet their fundraising goals, according to a press release from Rhinelander High School trip leader Linda Goldsworthy.

"One of our parents is a teacher in Merrill. Her Spanish Club used this activity with a lot of success last summer. We are hoping to do the same," said Goldsworthy of the flamingo fundraiser.

The premise is simple. For a $25 donation, people can have a friend's/victim's yard flocked with 20 of the tropical birds. The flocks began arriving on local lawns Sunday, according to the release.

Flockees, or those lucky enough to have the territorial bird settle on their lawns, have options according to Goldsworthy.

"Typically, the flamingos roost in a yard for about 3-4 days. If a flockee wants them taken away sooner, they can simply contact our expert Flocking Technicians about immediate removal," said Goldsworthy.

Those who are willing to join the fun are encouraged to fill out a Flocking Work Order.

"When the flamingos land in your yard, an information packet is attached to your front door. The folder includes information on our fundraiser and Flocking Work Orders," explained Goldsworthy. "Ideally, the flockee becomes a flocker by donating $25 to the France 2020 Trip."

While Goldsworthy isn't sure how well the fundraiser will be received in Rhinelander, she knows that the Merrill High School Spanish Club raised over $5,000 with their flamingos.

"I understand that Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Alzheimer's Association have also done this fundraiser in the past with a lot of success and fun," she added.

Goldsworthy has reached out to local law enforcement to ensure student safety throughout the summer fundraiser, the release notes. Both the county and city are aware of the event.

"This fundraiser is meant to be done in good spirits, so we ask that residents not hurt the tropical birds," Goldsworthy said. "We are hopeful that those in the community find it entertaining."

Those interested in participating in flocking a friend should contact Laura Eagleson at 715-369-2449, or stop in at the Rhinelander High School office to pick up a Flocking Work Order.
