Thursday City Council meeting canceled
By River News Staff

Quorum issues continue to bedevil the Rhinelander Common Council as the panel on Thursday canceled its third meeting in less than three weeks.

The council held a special meeting Monday, Aug. 5 and was set to reconvene at 7:15 p.m. Thursday for a second special meeting however, by midday Thursday, city administrator Daniel Guild announced the meeting had been canceled due to a lack of available alderpersons.

"It is with regret that I must inform the Common Council and the public that three Councilmembers have just informed me that they will not be able attend tonight's planned meeting. Therefore, due to a lack of quorum (Quorum is 6 of 8 Councilmembers, not counting the Mayor), the meeting will need to be cancelled," Guild announced in an email to local media outlets and via Facebook.

The council has found itself off schedule since late July. The group held a regular meeting July 8 but the July 22 regular meeting had to be canceled due to an agenda posting error. That meeting was rescheduled for July 29, however it was later learned a quorum would not be available that night.

All members were present when the panel met Monday evening, Aug. 5, however Thursday's cancellation was also due to a lack of a quorum.

It's unclear if the missed meetings will have an impact on the flow of city business going forward or if another special meeting will be called this month.

It should be noted, however, that planning for the fiscal year 2020 budget process was on the agenda for the two most recent canceled meetings.

The council's next meeting is set for 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12.
