Quick work by Rhinelander firefighters Wednesday morning resulted in the safe evacuation of occupants from a burning building.
According to Rhinelander Fire Chief Terry Williams, firefighters were called to 35 Randall Avenue Wednesday after a structure fire was reported.
"At 10:52 a.m, Rhinelander Fire Department along with Rhinelander Ambulance was paged to 35 Randall Avenue for a report of a structure fire with occupants still inside," Williams said in a press release. "On our arrival a contractor who was working on-site and the home owner's son were outside and stated they thought the fire was out, but there were occupants inside on the upper floor. Rhinelander fire crews entered the structure through a front window that was breeched by Rhinelander police department at our request. The fire crew evacuated the occupants and their dog safely from the upper floor while a crew made entry with a hoseline in the rear of the structure. Our crews entered the basement full of black smoke where the fire was reported to be out and found the fire actively burning. Our crew did a quick knockdown of the fire and then began overhaul. We remained on scene for a while after the fire was extinguished to work with Rhinelander police department on the investigation into cause and origin. At this time we are still investigating cause and will be able to report on that at a later date."
According to Williams, there were no working smoke detectors in the dwelling.
