Oneida County drug take back set for Oct. 26

Law enforcement agencies in Oneida County will be participating in a drug take back program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office, Minocqua Police Department, Rhinelander Police Department and Three Lakes Police Department, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration and Wisconsin Department of Justice, will give the public another opportunity to prevent prescription medication abuse and prescription medication theft by eliminating from their homes potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs, the agencies announced in a press release.

In addition to the Minocqua, Rhinelander and Three Lakes police departments and the Oneida County Sheriff's Office, medications for disposal may be brought to the Oneida County Landfill.

The goal of the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposal while also educating the public about the potential for abuse of these medications. During the last National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Oct. 27, 2018, 68,016 pounds of unused medications were collected from Wisconsin residents in locations all over the state.

The service is free and anonymous and no questions will be asked.

Contacts for the program are officer Devon Gaszak with the Minocqua Police Department, captain Ron Lueneburg at the Rhinelander Police Department, chief Scott Lea with the Three Lakes Police Department or Hook with the Oneida County Sheriff's Office. Prescription medication (controlled and non-controlled), prescription patches over-the-counter medications including vitamins, prescription ointments, prescription lotions and prescription creams, inhalers, patches, non-aerosol sprays, liquid medications in their original containers, and pet medications are all accepted. Do not bring illegal drugs, needles/sharps, mercury thermometers, aerosol cans, bio-hazardous materials (anything containing a bodily fluid or blood), flares, personal care products (shampoo, soaps, lotions, sunscreens, etc.), household hazardous waste (paint, pesticides, chemicals, oil, or gas) or acids.

Participants will be asked to empty their medication bottles into boxes. Blister packages are acceptable without the medication being removed.

Liquids, creams and sprays must be in their original packaging.
