Local woman accused of credit card theft

An area woman used a relative's credit card for more than $6,000 in unauthorized expenditures, according to an Oneida County Circuit Court complaint.

According to court records, Rachel Leidel, 37, Lake Tomahawk, was taken into custody last week after the Oneida County Sheriff's Department investigated a complaint of fraudulent use of a credit card.

According to the complaint, a woman phoned police in April regarding the charges. A deputy met with the alleged victim and their spouse - who believed the spouse's daughter, Leidel, was using the card in question. The couple told police Leidel had "... a history of mental health problems and drug dependencies, including opioid addiction, stemming from an incident in college where (Leidel) had been injured and placed on opioids for pain management."

The three lived together in Lake Tomahawk for the last several years, deputies learned.

The couple became suspicious when "near daily" packages for Leidel began arriving, the complaint indicates.

The couple realized the credit card was overdue and more than $5,000 in charges had been made to the credit card.

The grand total was just over $6,280, reports note.

At the time of the report, Leidel was at a treatment center for drug addiction, deputies were told by family.

When approached by police with the allegations, Leidel became "upset" and relayed she would pay back the purchases made, court reports state.

The credit card company made an offer with the owner of the card to settle and refund just over $3,000, resulting in a loss for the victim of more than $2,800.

Leidel is due in Oneida County Circuit Court before Judge Patrick O'Melia for an adjourned initial appearance Nov. 18.

She is free on a $5,000 signature bond.

According to court records, she does not yet have. a lawyer.
