In June 2019, a ceremonial groundbreaking took place at Camp American Legion near Lake Tomahawk for a cabin on Thrush Road to be named "The American Legion Family Cabin."

"Honoring our Gold Star Families of the Fallen," the ceremony's program read. "They shall never be forgotten."

"I dedicate it (the cabin) to the families of those who fell in service to our country," Frank Kostka, the outgoing commander of the Wisconsin American Legion, said at the time.

Over the course of the last few months, money for the 980-square-foot cabin - which will feature two bedrooms, full kitchen, living area and lake access - was raised and on Nov. 16, work at the site began in earnest as an excavator began digging.

The structure's footings were in place by the end of the day on Nov. 18.

Camp American Legion director Don Grundy said Monday he is hoping the cabin's walls will be in placed by the end of this week, but he had concerns because of the weather forecast. Several inches of snow is forecasted to fall before Wednesday night.

Still, he said the hope is to have the cabin ready in the spring with little more than landscaping left to do.

"My plan is to have the ribbon cutting right before Memorial Day," Grundy said.

The contractor for the project is Coffen Construction of Minocqua, but Grundy said there are things he and members of his staff and volunteers will be doing as the project proceeds.

"We'll be doing the flooring," he said. "We're doing any painting, the landscaping and the driveway."

Grundy said he'd like to see the first family of the fallen using the cabin very shortly after the ribbon cutting.
