Semco shutters Merrill operation; 140 out of work
Kayla Houp
Of The Lakeland Times

Approximately 140 employees with the Semling Menke Company, Inc. lost their jobs when the company permanently closed its facility in Merrill at the end of 2019.

"The closure has been caused by the company's inability to obtain further financing, the lack of orders, insufficient cash and the inability to sell the Company," Semling Menke Company, Inc. president Patrick Semling wrote in a notice submitted to the state dated Dec. 30, 2019.

The notice states all positions, "approximately 120 in Wisconsin" were expected to be immediately terminated effective "as of close of business December 31, 2019."

The notice also outlines a list of job titles and the number of workers affected in each, which totaled approximately 140.

According to the notice, the company had been pursuing additional financing to continue operations in Merrill, but had been unsuccessful and "unable to provide any notice until now."

The company served as a vendor for several companies in the Lakeland area, including Pukall Lumber in Arbor Vitae.

"We have had a long-standing relationship with SemCo as a Central Wisconsin manufacturer of windows," Sue Pukall said.

According to Pukall, Semco Windows made up approximately 40% of Pukall Lumber's window sales.

Pukall Lumber also offers windows from four other manufacturers.

"Customers will still have many good options, but the biggest difficulty is going to be sourcing out replacement parts," Pukall said.

The Lakeland Times reached out to Semco Window representatives for further comment, but no were not received as of press time.
