Four to vie for three school board seats
By River News Staff

The field is set for the April 7 general election to fill three seats on the School District of Rhinelander Board of Education. All three incumbents and one challenger will round out the field.

The incumbents seeking reelection are board treasurer Mike Roberts, Duane Frey and Ben Roskoskey. The lone challenger in the race is Merlin Van Buren.

Roskoskey has been on a leave of absence from the board due to being called up to active duty in the Wisconsin National Guard. Van Buren, who previously served on the board, was appointed to temporarily fill the set until either Roskoskey returns or the April election. Van Buren won the appointment over five other people who applied for the seat.

He previously served on the board from April 2011 until Roskoskey unseated him in April 2016. Roberts and Frey are members of the capital projects ad hoc committee that has been overseeing the planning for the Hodag Sports Complex. Roberts was appointed to the board in May 2009 after the resignation of Merri Lee Orgeman. Frey was elected in April 2014.

Since there are only four candidates, a primary election on Feb. 18 to winnow the field down will not be necessary.
