Lake Tomahawk man charged with making terrorist threats
River News Staff

A 50-year-old Lake Tomahawk man is being held in the Oneida County jail on a $5,000 cash bond after he allegedly made "terrorist threats" toward an employee of the Oneida County Department of Social Services.

According to the criminal complaint, an investigation began after the employee reported that when speaking to Ryan A. Mielkie via telephone regarding the denial of benefits, "Mielkie became agitated and aggressive" and threatened harm.

According to the complaint, Mielkie "stated he would resort back to what he did best and that was killing people, and he would kill them all."

The complaint indicates Mielkie is a military veteran.

In addition to the terrorist threat charge, Mielkie is also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting an officer.

He made his initial appearance on June 10 via video from the county jail.

In making his bond recommendation, Oneida County district attorney Mike Schiek noted that statements like those Mielkie is alleged to have made must be taken seriously.

"There's a legitimate concern when statements like this are made," he said. "I would consider this a very serious situation, aggravated in nature."

When Schiek began advising the court as to Mielkie's criminal history, Mielkie started to raise his voice. When asked if he had any statement to make on his own behalf regarding bond, he repeated "not guilty."

Oneida County circuit judge Mike Bloom set a $5,000 cash bond with conditions that the defendant have no contact with any employee of the Department of Social Services and may not come upon courthouse premises for any purpose, with the exception of scheduled court appearances in this case.

When asked if he had any questions, Mielkie stated he is a disabled veteran and uttered profanities.

Mielkie was back in court Monday afternoon for an adjourned initial appearance.

When Bloom asked him if he had secured the services of an attorney, he answered "negative, sir". He went on to say that he wants to have an attorney to represent him but the attorney's information is at his home.

After the court indicated the $5,000 cash bond would be continued, Mielkie asked if he could get a signature bond. He also made a statement indicating he suffered a "traumatic brain injury" in a motorcycle accident.

Bloom responded that he would take Mielkie's request for a signature bond "under advisement" and set another adjourned initial appearance for Friday afternoon, June 17.

The terrorist threat charge carries a maximum sentence of 3 1/2 years in prison.
