LWVNOW sponsoring presentation on treaties, tribal sovereignty and ceded territory

The League of Women Voters of the Northwoods is sponsoring an upcoming presentation on the importance of treaties and treaty rights.

Jenny Van Sickle will lead the presentation, which is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 23, at Lake of the Torches Convention Center in Lac du Flambeau.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the presentation will start at 6:30 p.m.

Ms. Van Sickle, BSW (Tlingit/Athabascan) is a key member of the Public Information Office of Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC) in Odanah, according to a LWVNOW press release announcing the presentation.

The presentation is co-sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, the League of Women Voters of the Northwoods, and WXPR.

It is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. It is also suggested that participants read a copy of the booklet Ojibwe Treaty Rights (GLIFWC) before the presentation. It is available free of charge at the front desk of the Lac du Flambeau Public Library, the Minocqua Public Library, and the Rhinelander District Library.

The presentation will be recorded and posted on LWVNOW's website (www.lwvnow.org) and YouTube channel (LWVNOW Information).

For release purposes, attendees will be asked to sign in.
