One injured in explosion at Phelps foundry
By River News Staff

An employee was severely burned Friday morning in an explosion at Phelps Cast.

According to the Vilas County sheriff's office, a 9-1-1 call came in at approximately 8:58 a.m. Friday reporting a large boom noise in the furnace area of Phelps Cast.

The explosion was in the foundry area.

An employee was reported to be burned "from head to toe," the sheriff's office said in a press release. The employee, a 31-year-old Eagle River man, was transported by helicopter to the Madison burn center.

The company safety officer will be conducting an investigation into the foundry explosion, the release states.

Phelps Fire Department and EMS, along with Land O'Lakes EMS, responded to this call with sheriff's office staff. Spirit Air 2 responded for medical transport.
