Little Chute man killed in snowmobile crash near Conover

A 55-year-old Little Chute man was killed Saturday after the snowmobile he was operating struck a tree on the shoreline of Buckatabon Lake in the town of Conover, according to the Vilas County Sheriff's Office.

According to a sheriff's office press release, a call came in at 1:42 a.m. Saturday reporting a snowmobile accident on the shoreline of Buckatabon Lake near Bauer's Dam Resort in Conover.

"The operator of the snowmobile was pronounced deceased on scene," the release states. "The initial investigation determined the operator was traveling at a high rate of speed across the lake. The operator was unable to stop and struck a tree on the shoreline."

Late Sunday, the operator was identified as Gary Van De Leygraaf, 55, of Little Chute.

Conover Ambulance, Conover Fire Department, Conover Rescue, Eagle River Ambulance, Eagle River Police Department, Vilas County Coroner's Office, and the Vilas County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene.

The crash is still under investigation by the Vilas County Coroner's Office and Vilas County Sheriff's Office.

How do you feel when politicians offer “thoughts and prayers” after a mass shooting occurs?

Please select one:
I have no problem with it. Politicians can't stop shootings and prayer is always good.
It makes me sick. They could do something to stop or reduce shootings, they just choose not to.
I don’t listen to politicans or care what they say.
