Despite the dusting of snow to kick off May, the Northwoods is slowly moving forward toward spring as several towns begin removing the weight limits on roads.
Many towns enacted a weight limit on town roads in late March, declaring vehicles over a certain tonnage cannot operate on posted town roads.
On May 1, the Vilas County Highway Department removed road limits from the county road system at 10 a.m. Manitowish Waters, Lac du Flambeau, Woodruff, Arbor Vitae, and Plum Lake also removed the weight limits on town roads early Wednesday morning while Minocqua and Boulder Junction opened theirs at noon on May 2.
Though some towns have been able to remove their weight limits on town roads, others are postponing it until next week.
This includes Oneida County roads, which are expected to open at noon May 6.
Other towns, such as Presque Isle, are facing inclement conditions that have prevented them from removing the weight limits.
"It might be another week," Presque Isle town clerk Lorine Walters said. "We don't have a set date yet."
The Town of Mercer is in a similar situation, with the removal of road weight limits postponed until conditions get better.
