Visitor spending surpassed $237 million in 2018, Department of Tourism figures show
State releases annual tourism statistics; Oneida County sees 3.33 percent growth in spending

Oneida County continues to be one of Wisconsin's favorite vacation destinations, according to figures released by the Wisconsin Department of Tourism Monday in conjunction with National Tourism Week.

Visitors spent $237.4 million exploring and relaxing in Oneida County in 2018, an increase of 3.33 percent over 2017 - an increase of more than $7 million year-to-year, according to a Department of Tourism press release.

Oneida County ranked top in the Northwoods and 16th overall in the state in terms of visitor spending.

In fact, tourism spending in the county has increased by more than $47 million since 2012, the release states.

"Whether this was your first visit to Oneida County, or your fortieth, we are so grateful to you," said Krystal Westfahl, president of the Oneida County Tourism Council (OCTC) and executive director of the Minocqua Area Chamber of Commerce. "Visitors help our local businesses thrive and keep our communities strong. We're so thrilled that travelers chose Oneida County in 2018."

Tourism accounted for 2,236 jobs in Oneida County in 2018, an increase of 1.01 percent over the previous year, the release notes.

Oneida County also collected $22.8 million in state and local taxes in 2018, taxes that otherwise would have been paid by Oneida County residents.

Tourism supports one out of every 13 jobs in the state, though that number is higher in tourism destinations like Oneida County.

Overall, visitors spent $13.3 billion in Wisconsin in 2018, an increase of 4.86 percent. Tourism accounted for 199,073 jobs and $1.58 billion in state and local taxes collected, according to the release.
