Male dies of self-inflicted gunshot wound near Nicolet College entrance (UPDATE)

An 83-year-old man died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at the entrance to Nicolet Technical College Thursday afternoon, the Oneida County sheriff's office has reported.

According to sheriff's captain Tyler Young, a 9-1-1 call was received at approximately 3:55 p.m. reporting a male lying face down at the County Highway G and Nicolet College entrance.

"It was reported that it appeared that he had a gunshot wound and there was a gun on the ground near the body," Young said in a press release. "Life saving measures were started and the subject was transported to St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander. The subject passed away from injuries at approximately 4:30 p.m. The initial investigation show this to be a self-inflicted gunshot, and the Nicolet Campus and the public were not in danger."

Late Friday, Young announced the man had been identified as Ralph A. Lucas, 83, of Rhinelander.

"Lucas was not a student or staff member of Nicolet College," Young noted.

The Rhinelander Fire Department, Pelican First Responders and the county medical examiner's office responded to the scene.
