New American Legion post one step closer to becoming a reality

Brian Jopek
Lakeland Times Reporter

"The belief in the past was not to use Camp American Legion as a recruiting mechanism," the camp's director, Don Grundy, told The Lakeland Times last month. "I asked at the time I started (in 2017) 'Why not? It's the best recruiting tool for the Legion you have in the state.' Now, they (Wisconsin Legion leadership) have shifted gears and realized the camp is the Legion's crown jewel in the state and we need to show people what it is we can do."

Grundy's comments to the newspaper came on the heels of an announcement June 9 by Wisconsin American Legion commander Frank Kostka regarding the creation of an American Legion post at Camp American Legion in Lake Tomahawk.

To be chartered, a new Legion post must have 15 new American Legion members, it was explained.

On June 19, Wisconsin American Legion adjutant Amber Nikolai announced that the effort to organize the new post was moving forward.

"Please allow me to inform you that as of today, June 19, 2019, Department Headquarters has officially received contact information (membership forms) from 17 veterans who are interested in joining The American Legion Family to help form Camp American Legion Post 1925," she said via email.

Nikolai went on to note that Chris Schmidt, who heads up the Wisconsin American Legion's membership program, sent the charter to the Legion's national headquarters June 19.

On June 21, Schmidt said she was told it takes 10 to 14 days from the time national headquarters receives a charter application for approval at that level.

"And then we'll start processing," she said.
