Police identify snowmobilers who died in Lake Nokomis accident

The Oneida County sheriff's office has identified the two snowmobilers killed early Sunday morning following a snowmobile accident on Lake Nokomis.

David Erdman, 31, of Hubertus and Kurtis W. Shernell, 27, of Hustisford, died when their snowmobilers plunged into Lake Nokomis, the department announced Monday.

A third snowmobiler, Austin J. Zillmer, 26, of Sussex, survived.

According to a press release issued by sheriff Grady Hartman, the sheriff's office received a call at approximately 3:09 a.m. Sunday reporting snowmobiles and riders in the water on Lake Nokomis near River Road.

"This was not on the designated snowmobile trail," the release states. "Upon arrival, it was learned that three snowmobiles with three riders total had gone into the water. One rider was able to get out and make the 911 call. The other two riders were deceased."

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the following: Nokomis Fire Department, Nokomis First Responders, Little Rice Fire Department, Oneida County EMS, Oneida County Medical Examiner, Lincoln County EMS, Lincoln County Dive Team, Newbold Fire Department, Spirit Ambulance, and the DNR.
