Three Lakes man arrested after backing over father who was helping to pull vehicle from ditch
By River News Staff

A 59-year-old Three Lakes man was killed Friday evening while helping his 29-year-old son whose vehicle was stuck in the ditch on County Highway X.

According to a Three Lakes Police Department press release, the Oneida County sheriff's office received a 9-1-1 call at approximately 9:27 p.m. Friday reporting that a man had been backed over by a truck on Highway X near the intersection with Medicine Lake Lodge Road in the Town of Three Lakes.

The Three Lakes Police Department, fire department, sheriff's deputies and the Oneida County Ambulance responded to the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the older man, identified Sunday as George Steinhaus of Three Lakes, was struck while helping to pull a vehicle operated by his son, Samuel, out of a ditch, the release states.

George Steinhaus was pronounced deceased at the scene. Samuel Steinhaus was arrested. Charges including homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle, 3rd offense operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, operation of a motor vehicle after revocation, and failure to install ignition interlock device have been forwarded to the Oneida County District Attorney's Office, the release states.

Law enforcement did not immediately identify the two men, or disclose their family relationship, to allow time for the notification of relatives. Their names were released in an updated press release issued at 11:15 a.m. Sunday. Three Lakes Police Chief Scott Lea later confirmed that Samuel is George's son.

The crash remains under investigation by the Three Lakes Police Department and the Oneida County Medical Examiner's Office.
