Sheriff's department deems alleged JWMS threat 'not credible'

A report that a James Williams Middle School student had sent a social media message to another student reportedly threatening violence at the school has been deemed 'not credible' by investigators from the Oneida County Sheriff's Department, according to patrol captain Tyler Young.

Parents of JWMS students were sent the following message Tuesday afternoon:

"It was brought to our attention this afternoon that a James Williams Middle School Student may have made a verbal threat directed towards students and staff at JWMS. The alleged threat is being actively investigated by law enforcement and the student is not at school and will not be returning to school at this time. Law enforcement is working cooperatively with the school district to resolve this situation. We will be working to increase our law enforcement presence in our building until the investigation is complete. We take the safety of our students and staff very seriously and wanted to be sure you were aware of this situation," the message said.

According to Young, the phones of the two students were checked and no messages between the two were found to have been sent.

District superintendent Eric Burke said the message was sent out to parents to reassure them that the matter is being investigated and safety is a priority.

A full story will be published in the Friday edition of the River News.
