BREAKING: City Council votes to terminate city administrator
Former Wisconsin Rapids mayor hired as a consultant

The Rhinelander City Council voted unanimously Monday evening to terminate the employment of city administrator Daniel Guild.

Guild was placed on paid administrative leave March 13 after Oneida County district attorney Michael Schiek charged him with a single felony count of misconduct in office. He was arrested March 9 following a months-long investigation by the Oneida County sheriff's office and other agencies. His defense team has since filed a motion to dismiss the case, which involves allegations he hid certain records requested by this newspaper and altered an official email. A hearing on the motion is scheduled for June 11.

Following a closed session discussion that lasted approximately 90 minutes, City Council president Ryan Rossing made the motion to terminate Guild's employment "without cause". The motion passed on a roll call vote. Guild, who previously worked as village administrator in Weston, was hired as Rhinelander's city administrator in September 2018.

Prior to Rossing's motion, alderperson Carrie Mikalauski made a motion to extend the city's consulting contract with former Wisconsin Rapids mayor Zach Vruwink until June 30.

During the open session portion of the meeting, Rhinelander Mayor Chris Frederickson announced he had hired Vruwink on an 11-day consulting contract. Mikalauski's motion to extend the contract also passed unanimously.

A full story on the council meeting will be published in our Friday print edition and on www.rivernewsonline.com.
