Six RSC swimmers compete in Mid-Season Showdown

Six Rhinelander Swim Club athletes competed in the 2016 Arena Mid-Season Showdown the weekend of Dec. 10 in Waukesha.

Ella, Charlie, Joseph and Grace Heck, along with teammates Abi and Makenna Winnicki, represented the Hodags at this USA Swim meet.

The meet was quite different than what the group is accustomed to. Swimmers needed a qualifying time in their events to be eligible compete. Ages 11-12 swim a preliminary race with the top eight finishers advancing to the finals. The top 16 swimmers advanced out of the prelims for those age 13 and up.

"Swim meets like this present an opportunity to participate in events that they wouldn't necessarily get to swim in regular conference meets," RSC coach Megan Cihla said. "When you have a meet that runs three days, you have more races to choose from. This was a big meet compared to our normal conference meets, with approximately 600 athletes participating. Most of the clubs that attend are clubs that swim year-round. It's exciting that some of our swimmers are willing to try different style meets and challenging themselves to swim against kids who have been training for a long period of time. Our club just started at the end of October."

Abi Winnicki set three new Rhinelander Swim Club records during the meet. The 10-year-old placed eighth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:42.28), ninth in the 100 backstroke (1:14.559) and second in the 100 freestyle (1:03.77), setting records in all three events. She finished fourth in her age group in the high points tally. Additionally, she placed third in the 50 butterfly, fourth in the 100 butterfly, fourth in the 100 IM and fifth in the 50 free.

Abi's older sister, Makenna, set a new club record in the 200 butterfly (2:29.38), placing ninth in the race. She also qualified for the state meet with her performance in the 200 backstroke, where she finished 43. Makenna Winnicki also finished 25th in the 200 freestyle and 50 freestyle, and 47th in the 100 freestyle.

Joseph Heck, 14, finished 15th in the high points total. He was fifth in the 100 breaststroke, seventh in the 200 breaststroke, ninth in the 100 freestyle, 14th in the 50 freestyle, 23rd in the 200 IM and 30th in the 100 backstroke.

Grace Heck was 39th in the 100 breaststroke, 54th in the 50 freestyle, 58th in the 100 freestyle and 59th in both the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Charlie Heck was 24th in the 100 breaststroke, 25th in the 50 backstroke, 32nd in the 50 breaststroke, 32nd in the 100 backstroke, 39th in the 100 freestyle and 41st in the 50 freestyle. Ella Heck was 50th in both the 50 breaststroke and 50 backstroke, and 73rd in the 50 freestyle.
