Middle school swimmers win Merrill triangular

The James Williams Middle School girls' swim team dominated a triangular meet Tuesday, winning eight of 10 events to easily defeat Merrill's Prairie River Middle School and Wausau West's John Muir Middle School in Merrill.

Abi Winnicki had a big night for the Hodags, winning all four events she entered. She took the 50-yard freestyle (25.76 seconds), the 100 freestyle (56.57) and was part of Rhinelander's winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Margaret Lambert, Sam Sundby and Ellyse Younker were all three-event winners for the Hodags. They teamed with Madyson Kramsvogel to win the 200 medley relay (2:17.02). Younker won the 100 IM (1:15.54) and was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay team (1:59.72). Sundby took the 100 breaststroke (39.62) and was on the 400 freestyle relay team (4:24.82). Emma Houg, Claire Caselton and Winnicki made up the other three legs in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

Lambert led Younker to the wall in the 50 backstroke for the Hodags' only 1-2 finish of the night. Caselton was the runner-up in the 200 freestyle and Hough took second in the 50 butterfly.

James Williams captured four of the top five spots in the 100 breaststroke. Abbie Ames finished third, Payton Seidl was fourth and Hailey Zubricky finished fifth in support of Sundby's win in the event.

The Hodags added third-place relay finishes in the 200 medley (Camilla Gruett, Eva Heck, Sadie Houghton and Seidl) and 200 freestyle (Kramsvogel, Ames, Seidel, Gruett) relays. Houg added a third-place finish in the 100 IM and Caselton took third in the 100 freestyle.

Houghton chipped in fourth-place finishes in the 50 butterfly and 50 backstroke, Gruett was fourth in the 200 freestyle, Lambert was fourth in the 50 freestyle and Lily Thorsen took fourth in the 100 freestyle. Alicia Lentine was fifth in both the 200 freestyle and 50 butterfly.
