Girls' basketball: Rhinelander (0-0) vs. Wausau West (0-0), 6 p.m.
The RHS girls' basketball team opens the regular season tonight against Wausau West High School in the Blow the Whistle on Cancer Tournament at D.C. Everest High School.
Both teams are looking to bounce back from sub-.500 seasons a year ago. The Hodags went 9-13 overall and were bounced out of the playoffs by eventual Division 2 state champion New London. Wausau West went 10-13 overall and finished sixth in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.
The difference is the Warriors have most of last year's rotation returning, including its four leading scorers in conference play - 5-9 forward Anna Brown, 5-7 guard Caity Coleman, 5-9 swing player Katrina Cihlar and 5-8 guard Jasmin Samz.
West is picked to finish third this season in the WVC, behind Stevens Point and Marshfield.
Tonight's game is part of a weekend tournament to raise money for The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Game officials and their associations will be making a contribution in support of The V Foundation's efforts for cancer research. In addition, many local, state and national sponsors will have silent auction items available for bidding when the gates open at 5 p.m. Fans may also choose to participate in a 50/50 cash raffle, or make monetary contributions to The V Foundation, which are tax deductible.
Check back tonight for a recap of the contest and look for the full story in Tuesday's River News.
