The Chequamegon/Phillips Screaming Eagles at Loggers (SEaLs) dominated from the opening faceoff Thursday, defeating the Rhinelander High School boys hockey team 9-1 at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
The SEaLs took a 4-0 lead after one period. Trent Wild scored unassisted for the Hodags eight seconds into the second period, but it was all Chequamegon/Phillips from there. They scored three goals in the next 2 minutes, 36 seconds and scored four times overall in the second.
The SEaLs added a goal late in the third period.
Chequamegon/Phillips outshot Rhinelander 37-10 for the game. Jake Arno made 14 saves on 18 chances in the first period. Alex Littleton played the rest of the way, stopping 14 of the 19 shots he faced.
The two teams will meet again in Rhinelander Dec. 6.
Rhinelander (0-2-0, 0-0-0 Great Northern) will travel to Tomahawk for a non-conference game Saturday.
Boys' swimming: Stevens Point 94, Rhinelander 59
The RHS boys' swim team was outclassed Thursday, falling 94-59 to Stevens Point at the SPASH Pool. SPASH had a sizable lead after eight events and essentially pulled its starters, swimming them as non-scoring exhibition swimmers.
Jake Zalewski scored a win for the Hodags in the 50-yard freestyle, Rhinelander's only victory against SPASH's starters.
