Gymnastics: Rhinelander 1st place, Chequamegon Invite

The RHS gymnastics team won the season-opening Chequamegon Invite Saturday in Park Falls.

The Hodags finished with a team score of 107 points, despite missing standout senior Elle Spiegelhoff (neck).

Hodag senior Megan Thornton won the all-around with a score of 29.15 points. She finished first on the uneven bars (7.5), second on the floor exercise (7.2) and tied for third on the vault (8.1). Sara Krueger won the floor exercise (7.875) and Stephanie Allen won the vault (8.3) for Rhinelander.

Rhinelander will host the annual Hodag "Snowflake" Invite Dec. 8.

Wrestling: Rhinelander 1st place, John Roberts Duals

The RHS wrestling team went a perfect 5-0 on the day and took first place at the John Roberts Duals in Antigo.

Rhinelander knocked off Marathon (51-20), Waupaca (45-21), Menominee Indian (60-15), Three Lakes (62-12) and Athens (43-23) to win the 10-team invite.

A trio of juniors led the way for the Hodags. Adam Woebbeking (182-195), Connor Johnson (195-220) and Bryce Bilogan (285) each went 5-0 on the day with four pins. Freshman Jon Fox had an impressive debut at 120, going 5-0 with three pins.

Rhinelander (5-0, 0-0 Great Northern) takes on state powerhouse Wisconsin Rapids Thursday in Rapids.

Boys' hockey: Tomahawk 8, Rhinelander 1

The RHS boys' hockey team lost a non-conference contest at Tomahawk 8-1 Saturday.

The Hatchets jumped out to a three-goal lead in the first period, scored four times in the second and once more in the third.

Ben Franson scored Rhinelander's goal at the 7:37 mark of the second period with assists from Kyle Thornton and Trent Wild.

Tomahawk outshot Rhinelander 46-16 for the game. Alex Littleton started for Rhinelander and made 15 saves in 19 chances. Jake Arno made 23 stops in 27 chances.

Rhinelander (0-3-0, 0-0-0 Great Northern) faces Chequamegon/Phillips Dec. 6 at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.

Boys' basketball: Rhinelander 65, Crandon 38

The RHS boys' basketball team took control early and cruised to a 65-38 non-conference victory at Crandon Saturday.

The Hodags went off for 24 points in the final 5:24 of the first quarter and took a 24-7 lead after one and never looked back. Rhinelander led 42-20 at halftime and 56-31 after three quarters.

Shane White had two slam dunks in the contest and finished with a game-high 20 points. Brett Mathews had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Rhinelander (2-0, 0-0 Great Northern) travels to Merrill Tuesday.
