RHS sports recap: Thursday, April 20

Girls' soccer: Rhinelander 2, Ashland 1

Alayna Franson's point streak continued and the Rhinelander High School girls' soccer team avenged its only loss in Great Northern Conference play over the last five seasons Thursday night with a 2-1 victory over the Ashland Oredockers at Mike Webster Stadium.

Franson scored both of Rhinelander's goals minutes apart in the first half, giving her a hand in each of the Hodags last 12 goals. That proved to be enough offense from the Hodags, who withstood a late rally that included a Kaylee McPeak goal in the 84th minute.

Team stats were not immediately available.

Rhinelander (5-2-0, 4-0-0 Great Northern) knocked Ashland from the ranks of the unbeaten in conference play (5-1-2, 4-1-0 Great Northern) though the Oredockers still technically hold the conference lead based on a double-points win over Antigo earlier in the season.

The Hodags travel to Wausau Newman on Tuesday.

Track: RHS boys 6th, girls 5th, Dale Peterson Invite

The Rhinelander High School track team soldiered through wet conditions Thursday as it competed in the annual Dale Peterson Invite at Listle Field in Antigo. The Hodags placed fifth in the seven-team field in the girls' division and sixth in the boys' division.

Lexie Rick had a big day for Rhinelander, taking first in the shot put, second in the discus and running a leg of the girls' victorious 4x400-meter relay. Lisa White added a third-place finish in the 800, Gracie Quinn was third in the 1,600 and Allie Fugle took third in the 3,200.

On the boys' side, Josh Francisco took third in the 100-meter dash and Drake Martin beat out two other competitors to win the quadrathlon consisting of the 100, 800, long jump and shot put.

The Hodags return to action next Thursday in an invite at Northland Pines.

Baseball: Antigo at Rhinelander, ppd.

Softball: Rhinelander at Antigo, ppd.

Boys' tennis: Rhinelander at Antigo, ppd.

Full reports will be published in Saturday's River News.
