Baseball: Rhinelander 9, Tomahawk 1
The RHS baseball team defeated Tomahawk at Stafford Field 9-1 Thursday. Full details were not immediately available.
Rhinelander (13-4, 8-2 Great Northern) hosts Rice Lake in a doubleheader Saturday.
Softball: Tomahawk 6, Rhinelander 5, 9 innings
The RHS softball team's seventh-inning comeback was not enough as the Hodags fell to the Hatchets 6-5 in nine innings Thursday in Tomahawk.
Makayla Kuester hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh to give the Hodags a 5-3 lead, but Katy Volz tied it with a two-run single in the bottom of the inning. Holley Winker won it on a walk-off single in the ninth.
Rhinelander (13-8, 8-4 Great Northern) will open the WIAA tournament next Wednesday at home against Merrill.
Boys' tennis: Rhinelander 2-0, Hodag Quad
The Rhinelander High School boys' tennis team won both of its duals Thursday in the regular-season ending Hodag Quadrangular at the RHS tennis courts.
The Hodags defeated Wausau Newman 6-1 in the semifinals and Ashland 4-3 in the championship.
Rhinelander went undefeated in the bottom two flights of singles and doubles with Matt O'Melia (3S), Russell Benoy (4S), Connor Young/Jared Haug (2D) and Marshall Bessette/Logan Oestreich (3D).
Logan Wild (1S) and Markus Johnson (2S) added victories in the win over Newman.
Rhinelander hosts a WIAA Division 2 subsectional Monday.
