White, Comer declare college choices

Jeremy Mayo
Sports Editor

Two Rhinelander High School seniors declared their post-high school athletic intentions Thursday afternoon in a joint press conference.

Owen White made official his commitment to play men's basketball at Michigan Tech University while Brad Comer signed a Letter of Intent to play baseball at Winona State.

White averaged a double-double for the RHS boys' basketball team last season, scoring 21.5 points and securing 10.1 rebounds in 17 starts for the Hodags.

He missed the first five games of the season due to a knee injury.

White will be heading to Michigan Tech, a NCAA Division-II school in Houghton, Mich. The Huskies went 16-14 overall last year for coach Kevin Luke. Overall, Michigan Tech was made nine NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and has won nine Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles.

White joins two older brothers who previously played collegiately at Michigan Tech. Keith Jr. and Chet White played football for the Huskies back in the 2000s. Another one of White's older brothers, Shane, played Division II men's basketball at Bemidji State University.

Comer hit a combined .340 between high school and American Legion baseball this year with three home runs and 44 runs batted in. Additionally, he went a combined 12-2 on the hill between the spring and summer seasons with a 2.18 ERA and 89 strikeouts over 83 1/3 innings of work.

Winona State, a Division II school in Winona, Minn., went 17-33 overall last year, including a 17-23 mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

The Comer family already has ties to the NSIC. Brad's older brother Kyle was a standout infielder at Minnesota-Duluth and earned Division-II All-America honors his senior year.

The press conference to announce the signings occurred at deadline for today's edition. Read reaction from White, Comer and their coaches in Tuesday's River News.
