RHS sports recap: Tuesday, Feb. 13

Boys' hockey: Rhinelander 5, Mosinee 4, OT

Danny Zuiker scored 5:53 into overtime as the Rhinelander High School boys' hockey team won its first playoff game in four years, defeating Mosinee 5-4 Tuesday at the Rhinelander Ice Arena in a WIAA regional semifinal.

The Hodags came back from two, two-goal deficits in the game. Trailing 4-2 less than a minute into the third, the Hdoags goals from Abe Laggis and Harlan Wojtusik to force an extra session. Laggis scored twice for the Hodags in the game and Freddy Wisner also scored.

Keign Charneski scored twice for Mosinee and his line mates Max Beste and Trey Fitzgerald each had a goal. Mosinee led 2-0 with a pair of goals 2:29 into the contest.

Rhinelander outshot Mosinee 33-24. Seth Stafford made 20 saves in the win.

The Hodags (16-9-0) travel to Northland Pines Thursday for a regional final.

Boys basketball: Rhinelander 60, Medford 46

The Rhinelander High School boys' basketball team clinched a share of its fifth Great Northern Conference title in six years, defeating Medford 60-46 Tuesday at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.

The Hodags raced out to a 31-13 lead in the first half and never looked back. Brad Comer led the way with 19 points. Owen White added 13 and Reese Flores had 12.

Rhinelander (18-2, 10-0 Great Northern) can clinch the conference outright at Antigo on Friday.

Gymnastics: Rhinelander 117.6, Chequamegon 104.2

The Rhinelander High School gymnastics team finished GNC Small play 4-0 with a 117.6-104.2 win at Chequamegon on Tuesday night.

Stephanie Kuestes won three of the four events, and finished second on the balance beam despite a score of 8.275, to win the individual all-around (32.8). Lilli Bishop finished fourth in the all-around for the Hodags, who did not have Raven Sturtevant for the meet.

Rhinelander got third-place finishes from Alyssa Mitchell on balance beam, Autumn Shafer on floor exercise and Harlie Zimmermann on uneven bars.

The Hodags will take their perfect conference record to the GNC meet Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids.
