Hodag tennis blanks Phillips

The Rhinelander High School girls' tennis team had no difficulty Thursday handling Phillips in Great Northern Conference play.

Rhinelander won every flight in straight sets, dropping only two games in the process, as it defeated the Loggers 7-0 in Phillips.

"Good scores from top to bottom of the lineup," coach Bob Heideman said. "If you can get a tad bit better at some aspect of our game, these matches are a success."

Singles went quickly in Rhinelander's favor. Annika Johnson was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Trinity Pesko in the top flight, Kenedy Van Zile beat Sophia DeByl, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 and Kaylee Pontell was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Allison Kulwicki at No. 3. Kat Metropulos picked up a forfeit victory for the Hodags in the fourth singles flight.

The Hodags had similar success in doubles. Jackie Wells and Alex Oestreich were 6-0, 6-0 winners over Hannah Angelo and Alyssa Huffman at No. 1. Lisa White and Kathryn Borski took the second flight over Ann Angelo and Amy Kerner, 6-1, 6-0 and Izzy Haverkampf and Jaiden Thiel were 6-0, 6-0 winners over Nina Sowami and Carli Foytik in the third flight.

The sweep moved Rhinelander to 3-0 in the Great Northern Conference with a perfect 42 points through three matches.

"We're happy to be where we are after about a third of the conference schedule," Heideman said.

While the wins were expected over a team that has perennially finished at the bottom of the GNC standings, Heideman noted things he wants to see the team work on moving forward.

"In doubles, if we can add a wrinkle like getting to up at the net (and) in singles if we can get one more ball back in each rally, because we'll need it tomorrow in the Wausau Invite," he said.

Rhinelander was in Wausau yesterday, playing Wausau East, Marshfield and GNC rival Antigo. The team plays two more matches in Wausau today.
