9/7/2019 7:34:00 AM Football: Hodags down Lakeland 25-7 in Axe Game
The Axe is back in Rhinelander and the Hodag football team is in territory it hasn't seen in decades.
Drake Martin rushed for 222 yards and three touchdowns Friday as Rhinelander defeated Lakeland 25-7 in the Northwoods Axe Game at Mike Webster Stadium.
Up 12-7 entering the fourth, Martin scored on back-to-back drives to help salt the game away, while the Rhinelander defense turned Lkalenad over on downs in its final two possessions.
Rhinelander lead 12-0 at halftime, as Peyton Erikson scored on Rhinelander first possession of the game and then the Hodags failed three times in Lakeland territory, turning it over on downs before Martin scored from 11 yards out with 11 seconds left in the first half.
Lakeland offense, which had scored 67 points in its first two games was limited to seven points Friday night. T-Bird dual threat quarterback Michael Ouimette rushed for a four-yard score to bring Lakeland within five points midway through the third quarter, but he threw two interceptions in the game as well.
Rhinelander improved to 3-0 on the season, the first time that's happened in the 2000s, and moved to 1-0 in the Great Northern Conference. The Hodgas will take on another undefeated team, Wausau East, next Friday at Mike Webster Stadium.
